Mark Briscoe

From his early childhood growing up in Devon and Somerset in the south of England, Mark Briscoe always showed an inclination towards drawing, painting and the visual arts. At the age of 7 he used to paint small watercolours of birds and wildlife and later found influence in the works of fantasy artists like Roger Dean and Patrick Woodroffe. At the age of 16 he studied graphic design and fine art at college in Torquay and went on to study art restoration at a studio in Covent Garden, London where he discovered some essential techniques in paint finishes and mediums. During this period he became interested in Indian meditation (Sahaja Yoga) which had a considerable influence on his artistic direction taking him to Rajasthan in India to study traditional Indian painting.
Under the guidance of artist R.K. Sharma he learned methods for painting in the Mughal and Kangra valley style. He also developed a fascination with eastern lacquer which lead to his working for several years in the field of decorative “Chinoiserie” painted furniture. He worked on many important commissions, collaborating on projects with top interior designers Nina Campbell, Joanna Wood and Lady Victoria Waymouth. Between commissions for furniture projects he continued to develop techniques for his Indian compositions, working now on a much larger scale than he had been accustomed to while studying in India. His paintings were given a massive endorsement by business magnate and tycoon, Lord Swraj Paul who as guest of honour, opened Mark’s solo exhibition at the Nehru Centre in Mayfair, London.
